Urban Street

Urban Street is a short street in East Billerica running south about 600 feet from Baldwin Road, west of Allen Road, to the grounds of the Locke Middle School. It was laid out on "Baldwin Manor, Subdivided for Roger Toothaker, Jr.," a plan dated June 1960 and drawn by James B. Monahan, registered land surveyor, approved by the Planning Board on July 28, 1960 and recorded on September 30, 1960 (Plan Book 93, Plan 118). The plan shows two 50 foot streets off Baldwin Road behind a row of existing house lots: Alton Street on the west and "Urban Street" on the east, with Lots 13 to 18, of about 25,000 square feet each, along it. At its end the street met the land of John D. Cooke and Ida Elfman.

The houses on the street are dated by the assessors to about 1960. At the annual town meeting of 1967, in the session of April 1, 1967, the town voted unanimously under Article 68 "to accept Urban Road as a public way, from the southerly line of Baldwin Road southerly a distance of approximately 550 feet." The town report thus calls it Urban Road; the subdivision plan and later town records call it Urban Street. The Cooke and Elfman land at its end was bought by the town in 1966 for the Locke Junior High School, opened in 1968, and the school's drive, entered in the wiki as Locke School, now joins the south end of Urban Street.

The origin of the name Urban was not found. Baldwin Road and Urban Street are listed among the town's drainage projects of 1976 and 1977.
